Point of sale display stands are playing a huge role in the revival of high street retail spending, years after the fall of the high street was announced by partisans of e-commerce. The recent Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales saw an unparalleled number of point of sale displays promoting flash discounts in hundreds of shops across the UK.
With such a powerful marketing tool now at the disposal of retailers and brands, it is fair to ask what point of sale display stands actually are, and what varieties can be obtained. This is the subject of this article. We will briefly introduce the different types of POS display and then point you in the direction of where further information can be found to aid a balanced judgement.
Point of Sale (POS) Displays Defined
For our purposes, a POS display is a self-contained unit including actual products that is located on or near a checkout, or next to a shopping aisle in a retail environment. Though some displays can be elaborate, most are fairly small and compact, making them cheap to produce and easy to move around.
Point of sale displays are most commonly made of cardboard, with some incorporating a wooden pallet or supporting frame. They can be designed to accommodate a variety of brand messages, colours, shapes and images – with the purpose of attracting a specific type of consumer.
Types Of POS Display Stand
The actual design of POS displays vary widely – with many being completely unique. However, there are four main types of display stand that are used for different purposes. These are as follows:
1) Free Standing Display Unit (FSDU)
The most common type of point of sale display stand, an FSDU can incorporate almost any product you want to promote, ranging from books to make up. These tall, floor based displays bring promotional products to consumers at eye height, encouraging engagement. They can hold a reasonable quantity of product and are slim enough to be moved around and positioned at different parts of the store as required.
2) Pallet Displays
Pallet Displays are literally a pallet full of products surrounded by an easy to erect cardboard promotional framework. You often see them outside petrol forecourts holding seasonal goods, such as barbecue briquettes in the summer and bags of firewood/kindling in the winter. They can be easily adapted for any fast selling product, such as newspapers and soft drinks.
3) Countertop Display
A small breed of POS display are designed to sit on countertops close to a shop’s tills. They are cheap and very effective at marketing small items across hundreds of retail units. Popularly used to promote snacks, chewing gum, trading cards and so on, a countertop display unit can be customised to match your brand identity.
4) Dump Bins
This unattractively named type of POS display is an extremely versatile way of storing and promoting mid-sized products! A dump bin is a large cardboard barrel or bucket that can contain toys, CDs, confectionery and many other types of product. They are easy to put together at short notice, making them a great choice for promotional items at conferences and events, as well as for semi-permanent retail use.
